Following continued ground assessments across the trail corridor, 10 stages of the Pekoe Trail are now open under Green status.
These stages are assessed as clear of active warnings and are open for hiking under normal conditions.All updates below are based on verified, on-ground reports from area coordinators, Trail Hosts, and partner estates. Conditions may change with weather, and hikers are advised to check updates regularly. 

🟢 Open Stages (Clear)

The following stages are open and clear from warnings:

  • Stage 06: Watagoda to Kotagala
  • Stage 07: Kotagala to Norwood
  • Stage 08: Norwood to Bogawanthalawa
  • Stage 10: Dayagama to Horton Plains
  • Stage 11: Horton Plains to Udaweriya
  • Stage 14: St Catherines to Makulella
  • Stage 15: Makulella to Ella
  • Stage 16: Ella to Demodara
  • Stage 17: Demodara to Hali Ela
  • Stage 22: Kandapola to Nuwara Eliya

🟡 Minor Impact Stages

Warning Level: Low

All minor impact stages are hikeable. Hike with caution and check
regular trail status updates and weather conditions before departure.

  • Stage 09: Bogawanthalawa to Diagama
  • Stage 13: Haputale to St Catherines
  • Stage 18: Hali Ela to Ettampitiya
  • Stage 19: Ettampitiya to Loonuwatta
  • Stage 20: Loonuwatta to Udupussellawa
  • Stage 21: Udupussellawa to Kandapola

🟠 Moderate Impact Stages & 🔴 High Impact Stages

Warning Level: Medium

Hiking remains possible with precautions and under all current weather advisories.
Solo hiking is not recommended. Travel in a group or with a Trail Host.

  • Stage 01: Hanthana to Galaha
  • Stage 05: Pundaluoya to Watagoda
  • Stage 12: Udaweriya to Haputale

Warning Level: High

These stages are temporarily closed due to high-risk conditions,
limited access, or because they have not yet been fully evaluated for safety.

  • Stage 02: Galaha to Loolkandura
  • Stage 03: Loolkandura to Tawalantenne
  • Stage 04: Tawalantenne to Pundaluoya

The Pekoe Trail Watch App

To improve real-time safety and transparency, hikers and trail partners can now
access verified updates through the Pekoe Trail Watch App.

  • Report landslides, fallen trees, damaged bridges, overgrowth, or access issues
  • Upload geotagged photos and ground observations
  • Support faster response and accurate public updates

All reports are reviewed and verified before being shared publicly.

This assessment reflects the best available information at the time of publication. Conditions may exist that are not noted here and may change due to weather or other factors. Hikers must use their own judgement and hike subject to trail terms and conditions.
