The Pekoe Trail Organization urges all hikers to refrain from using any stage of the Pekoe Trail at this time due to ongoing extreme weather conditions across the Central Highlands. Heavy rainfall, flooding, strong winds and landslide risks have made the trail network unsafe for all forms of hiking and outdoor movement.
Multiple stages of the highlands are currently experiencing:
- Hazardous trail conditions
- Falling debris and landslide threats
- Blocked or unstable access roads
- Telecom outages -Nuwaraeliya, Passara, Kadugannawa and Welimada
- Reduced visibility and rapidly shifting weather patterns
In addition, emergency response teams are stretched across affected districts, and access to remote areas may be delayed.
For your safety, and to support the safety of local communities and emergency personnel, all hikers are strongly advised to stay off the trail until conditions improve and official clearance is provided.
If you are currently on the trail stranded, or in need of relief from the current situation, please call Disaster Management Center (DMC) Hotline 117
We are closely monitoring updates from national authorities and will issue further announcements as soon as the situation stabilises.
Stay safe and thank you for your cooperation.
The Pekoe Trail Organization
